Brown Bullhead - How Big?
Brown Bullhead - How Big?
Hello, I'm new to catfish and I have a brown bullhead who is now about 6-7" now, and what a personality, I have him in with 3 Tiger Oscars, and a few other smaller fish, he doesn't seem to see as well as the Oscars so now at feeding time he sticks mouth out of the water for me to put the food right in it. Anyway I was wondering just how big I should expect him to grow?

Brown Bull Head How big?
I caught one 16 inches long from the Snake River in Eastern Washington but 10-12 inches is more typical. I think our state record is about 4-1/2 lb.s. They can be pretty voracious eaters and can reach 12 inches in a large tank.
I would always catch them from a school of hundreds where somewhere nearby the male is watching over them. At that size they are jet black, cute and good coldwater aquarium fish. I got rid of them at about 4 inches because they lose there black color and start eating anything they can swallow. Like many big cats they usually are ok with fish twice their size. Blue Gills and Pumpkin Seed Sunfish make good tank mates and are pretty fish. Have fun. They need to be kept in the low 70's for staying healthy.
