raising of Otocinclus sp "negros" / "Paraguay
Hallo,
4 weeks ago my Otocinclus sp "negros"/"Paraguay" spawned and I saw about 20 frys (4-5mm). I left them in the 54l heavily planted tank and tried to feed with atemia nauplia and spirulina (pills + dissassembled). About 10-12 days after hatching they died within 2 days.
Now my "girls" are fat again and I expect them dayly to spawn...
thanks and greetings,
Michael Leichter
P.S. some more otos would make my wife very Happy

Hi Michael!
Congratulation on the spawning, what were the different water parameters and what did youdo to make them spawn. Where have been place the eggs and how is your tank set up?
What are the other tankmates?
Have they respawn yet!
Regarding the raising of the young, you might want to isolate them in a small nursery with some java moss in.
Check also in the shane world section under reproduction article, you will find some information regarding the raising of the youngs!
Cheers
Yann

they grow !
Hi Yann !
They spawned again !
Here is some update on our attempt to make more Otosâ?¦
Tank setup:
40 l tank stuffed with plants (Cryptocoryne, Ceratophyllum, Ludvigia, small Echinodorus & Hydrocotyle) and swimming plants (Riccia flutans & lemna minor).
The tank is in the kitchen facing the window resulting in one side being full of algae.
Water:
Cologne tab water: 13 °dH
Water changes: 2 times 1/3 of tank content per week.
Spawning, hatching & raising diary:
The tank is populated just by 3 Otos (1 boy & two girls). We feed them on spirulina & cucumber and sometimes potato.
We detected the first some 15 eggs (Diameter 2mm, white/milky/transparent) on 18 march
(We are not sure weather we detected them immediately after spawningâ?¦)
The eggs were glued to the front window, Cryptocoryne and the most of them to bigger leaves (Hydrocotyle, Ludvigia).
On 20.3 we saw in some eggs some movement.
After hatching (21.3) we started catching the fry (4-5mm) on 24 march (no yolk visible anymore) and transferred the sweeties to a 25 l tank.
The tank was stuffed with plants as well (Ceratophyllum, Hydrocotyle, Java moss) and equipped with a so called â??Hamburger Mattenfilterâ?

Re: they grow !
update....
around 10th april some otos babies died.
Replacing artemia with "micro" worms solved the problem.
Since then we had no losses. The biggest Otos are now 2,3 cm long and they are already going for cucumber...

When it rains it pours!
Watch for an article in the Catfish of the Month coming (Jool's assures me) very soon. Actually, the ball is in my court, I have to put a few final touches on the article...
The fish in question is :
Hisonotus leucofrenatus.
When mine bred (which they do often), I took a batch of eggs by relocating them by moving a bunch of Anubias nana plants the eggs were adhered to
another tank. I raised 5 of the lot (guessing roughly 20-25 eggs at the start, most got picked off by other tankmates) to 12mm long using OSI Micro Invertebrate Food (the stuff for Marine Feather Duster Worms) and crushed flakes/Algae disks.
