It is quite obviously a fish in the Ancistrinae group, but which one is harder to say. It resembles in the "wormline" patterns in the face, but it's almost certainly not that [the rest of the pattern doesn't match very well!].
It's a beautiful fish, and it may not have an L-number yet.
Any more info, like where it's from, would be helpfull.

Peckoltia sp. "Rio Curua" from Northern Brazil. See Wels Atlas Vol 2 p 679 is about the closest I can find. The fish being on black gravel probably changes its appearance a bit.
Nice fish mind you, should not be too hard to breed...

Hi!
I ll wait until the price drops down a bit and when more specimens will be imported!!!
Always the same story with new fish, you'll find them for awfull price at first and then it gently drops down as time goes by...
See with the Hypancistrus zebra a few years before the Ban!! See with Hypancistrus sp L340...prices has quite drop lately...
Cheers

Japan Rules !
Dont take this the wrong way but ....
You would have your eyes opened if you were
to see the wonderful fish the Japanese shops get .
The UK ,European and US Market will not pay the prices
So the Japanese get all the best and new fish ..
I have seen it ...
There are not to many places that are brave enough to import the New/Undescribed fish ..
You all thought it was a beautiful fish until the price was mentioned .
I find it sad that the Exporters are also condemed for going to extremes to get the new fish only for People in the UK<US and Europe to say ohh they are a bit expensive..
I have experienced fish that were only imported once never to be seen again .. I hope this fish becomes accesible for the masses ..$$$..
Meanwhile Japan China Taiwan are all buying the better fish .
If L46 becomes available again where do you think they will go ?Black Rays ?Best arrowanas?Best rare corys?Dats?

It's rare to see a new Pl*co as beautiful as this one. I really hope it's not too rare in it's natural habitat.
You just need to take a quick peek at some Asian importersites to get the idea of how much spectacular fish they get, most of all Pl*cos. We must not forget that the exporters in South America live off the income they make from exporting fish, so of course they will prefer shipping oddities to the Asian market where they get much more money for the fish. It's not hard to understand.
Apistogramma species are popular fish in several Asian countries, and even they are very expensive there compared to the rest of the world. However since these are fairly easy to breed and raise, we still get our share of them in Europe/US.
Since rare fish equals big money in certain Asian markets, this allows the importers to have their own exclusive exporters in South America, which are given the resources to find rare new fish, and of course keep the catching place secret. Some big European importers have their own exclusive exporters as well, but this it not too common. Most exporters sell to any interested importer, and only few exporters seem to offer strange new highly valued species openly.
So it seems if a species is very rare, or lives in a remote area known to only a few catchmen, we are unlikely to see it in European/US stores, or at least the price will be equal to what the Asian market is willing to pay.

Hi!
Imo its not a problem here in Germany as most people that think of "spectacular" fish mean big ones. And looking at it theres just no real market for 40 cm Pseudacanthicus or what else here.
Looking at it we got the largest breeding stock (from what I can tell) of L46, 236 and Belo Montes here. What use is it to get a beautiful fish for 1k and not being able to breed it.

A closer look at those Asian sites will tell you that there are quite a few strange species of smaller Pl*cos in the trade there as well. Species that are definately Hypancistrus, Peckoltia or similar, but hard to ID because we haven't seen them before.
I have contacted Ingo seidel for his opinion on the fish this tread is about.

True, very true. However, the germans do get a lot of very nice fish too.sojapat wrote:So the Japanese get all the best and new fish
Personally I think it's a direct reflection on the size of the hobby in the area - supply and demand. If there's sufficiently many people willing to pay 190 euros for fish, then fish worth 190 euros will start to show up.
Hi Mike...
I wish you were right but we do not even get offered the fish..
For example .. I offered my shipper 4 times the normal list price for L25 @35cm he laughed an told me he can get 8 times the money from Japan... Really ..
Get this...
I visited my Exporter in Peru in September ..
Mr Kamihata (Hikari) has a member of staff in the fish installation Tahachi was his name..
He looks at the fish going through to see which he will send to his Employer in Japan..
Man it is an eye opener ...

I received an answer from Ingo Seidel today. Neil Woodward in Wigan (UK) imported a single specimen of this fish from Martin Mortenthaler in Peru, who has brought several new and striking species of fish to the market in recent years. According to Seidel, this fish is brand new and never seen before, and belongs to the Peckoltia/dwarf-Panaque groups. I'm sure we'll see more of them, as with Heros sp."Rotkeil" and Nannostomus mortenthaleri which were also first exported by Mortenthaler.

ymmas means the exporter you talk of...Mr Mortenthaler ..
He actually has a Japanese man looking at all the new fish we were very luck to get this one ..
Aparentley they did not think it was saleable
It is a beauty ..
I only hope we do get more .. So that it can be bred .
Martin is a great guy ...and a fish enthusiast ..
I am sure this fish will not be ignored by him ..
More will come ..I hope cheaper..

I thought I'd provide you all with a link to an Asian importer, to show what we discussed in this thread regarding how many strange, new Pl*cos are shipped to the Asian market. Scroll down and feast on the collection, it's not the kind of Hypancistrus selection you're likely to encounter in your LFS I believe...Obviously we are yet to see all Hypancistrus species in the trade here.
