new project... 16' x 4' x 4' tank! Shoal of ottos on page 2
I was contracted to help set up a 16' x 4' x 4' tank (2000 gallons). link
Yes there will be some cats.... but no real preditors... just coreys and some other Pl*cos. It will be a South American Planted tank. Check it out and let me know what you think. I will post some pictures once the cats start going in.

Barbie,
Justin has really refined his planted tank skills. The last time I was at his house I was blown away by his tanks (and envious). Any chance you will come over the mountains in August? I'll be in Seattle the entire month and we could do a mini-NW PC get together.

August will (hopefully) be the month I'm setting up the new store . I might be resembling a basket case but I will definitely see what I can do! One of the daughters is getting married in October over there too so I'll be coming over one way or the other but it's always preferable to go along on your tank tour if possible ;). If I can't make it I might have to figure out an incentive program to get you to bring the wee one and come over for a day or two!
That tank really is amazing! I'd have to get in and work on my planted tank here before I was safe letting anyone serious about them in the house ;).

I've done quite a few restaurants, etc.and the request is usually for a saltwater tank. Sometimes a restaurant/club starts out with a saltwater tank and switches over to freshwater. Concrete floors are my favorite, and only choice these days, since things like fish tanks, pool tables, hot tubs and things I haven't even imagined may be placed there. I was seeing "ADA" and "nightclub" and I automatically thought "Americans With Disabilities Act."
The rock/wood work looks great. Is there a sump/resevoir under the tank or in a remote location?

I was just thinking Shane and I should do a little road trip when he gets back State side. I think I might be able to convince him to head east for a day!
The tank is half planted.... waiting for the next shipment of plants. And more fish later this month. There is a pump room down stairs. I will post more pictures of that later this week. you can check it out via the link I posted. We will have some cool cat going in later next month after some quarinteen time. I will post pictures of them here along with a picture of the otto shoal. It so cool to see 300 ottos swimming past your face!

That's great tank :).
It's weight will be about 10 tons, right? I wonder what is it standing on? :)
WhitePine do you know why previous tank started to leak? Maybe it is too big to be only glass-tank?
Regards.

It's closer to 8 tons with substrate and water(16,000 lbs).
It has a 3 foot thick concrete base that was engineered into the building structure. It is engineered to hold 20 tons! Previous tank had a bad seam that started to leak after 2 years. It's a Plexi tank.... about 3.5" thick!
I will post more pictures once the new cats go in!
Cheers, Whitepine

Nice structure! Sounds like there will be breeding opportunities in this tank with nature taking its course.WhitePine wrote:It's closer to 8 tons with substrate and water(16,000 lbs).

How's the heating handled - are you heating in the filter? Also, any pics of the tank now it's got fish in?

sorry, I lost track of this posting. The heating is actually a mute issue(large inline heater)... it is really a cooling issue. since the set up we have been battling heat build up with the closed canopy on the tank and the MH lighting. Not to mention the closed room where the sump and pump live. The tank temps where getting into the mid 80's till we vented the sump room. Now the tank is right around 80 degrees. How's the heating handled - are you heating in the filter? Also, any pics of the tank now it's got fish in?

Plants hitting the surface, waiting to get pruned.
Riccia carpet coming long.... right after this shot, the riccia was thinned out and tied to more slate. The background is now totally covered with riccia carpet too!
Just so you get an idea of scale, this side if the tank is 4 feet by 4 feet. The swords are almost 3 feet high along with the aromatica. The forground plants are blyxa japonica and sunset hygro(this will be replanted next month).
150 more Ottos will go in on Tuesday (8/8/2006). First actual prunning will happen in about 2 weeks. At the end of the month more moss, anubias and ferns will go in.
I will get a full length tank shot later this week for you all.

The riccia is really a pita... you would seriously be better off with glosso, or hairgrass.

Yeah i was just reading up on hairgrass, maybee ill go for that and make a nice area for my little ones to play in.
P.S whats the running cost of that tank!!! i want to start my 10ft tank with a 4ft sump (My existing tank) and i want 2 toilet cisterns acting as the automatic water fillers and a hole host of other goodyt to do auto water changes and self water additions with an external system to bring rain water in as well to relive some of the cost,
Also going to be running the air pump with a feed from outside the house to provide clean air (No furneture Polish)
And its gunna cost, elec and water i think are £900 a year!!! i hope i got my math wrong
