Confirmation that this is S. ornatipinnis?

I was sold this as S. ornatipinnis and would like to confirm it as there seems to be a lack of pictures of this species on the net.

Definitely not S. ornatipinnis, as it is a barred (not spotted) species.

In that case what is it?

also it bears a resemblance to the picture of a S. ornatipinnis on scotcat here http://www.scotcat.com/mochokidae/s_ornatipinnis1.htm

it looks to me like the spots themselves are in a barred formation except they have broken up.

If this is truly not S. ornatipinnis then I will have to take this up with the LFS as I payed a fair price for him when I bought it.

The color pattern is strongly reminescent of S. pardalis.

I agree with Silurus definately not Synodontis ornatipinnis

Without loking through some other information at this stage not sure but could be something similar to Synodontis pardalis!

to me they dont look like my syno. but either way what is known about s. pardalis? i couldnt find it in the cat-elog

i did find a little info on fishbase though. How common are these?

It is unfortunate that its not s. ornatipinnis but fortunatly i checked this out before buying the second one that the lfs had.

dare I ask, is it likely that this is infact some kind of hybrid?

The goldfishbowl is a good place to shop, but I wouldn't put my last pennies on the correct identification of fish in their "Atlas".

Silurus is pretty good at spotting hybrids normally, so I suspect that's not the case. However, when googling for S. pardalis, I found a czech web-site that had these for listed for sale here. The Czech are known to create hybrids, so it's not entirely impossible. And I could only find one more picture of S. pardalis, that looked very similar to the ones on The Goldfishbowl.

it would appear that this fish is more rare than S. ornatipinnis, so whilst it's not what you asked for, it may be more interesting - as they are rarer...

I guess you can't ask the seller where it came from?

thanks Mats, i had the same impression of the goldfishbowl atlas, and wouldnt typically put much faith in such an atlas of fishes, but it was just a quick look

, when i get a chance I will talk to the lfs and try to figure out where it came from.

Whilst rarety does make things more interesting, its not so much that i mind if its rare or not, its more that i want to know as much information as possible about caring for it, i currently house over 30 species of cats and make sure that they all get an environment similar to their natural habitat hence why it would be handy to know more.

Of course if it does turn out to be rarer than the ornatipinnis then thats not a bad thing, it just means ill have to resume my search for a real ornatipinnis

photos of s. pardalis on goldfishbowl look like young especially first picture.

Sorry for interrupting but what do you think about picture of s. velifer in goldfishbowl atlas? What species this could be?

They are a hybrid involving to some degree.

I had to dig out Poll to be honest, but it looks like a good match to me! This species isn't even in the cat-elog!
