Unknown wildcatch from alanquer

Hello my name is Michael and I'm from germany,

i registerd me in this forum to ask you for help (sorry for my terrible english)!

I have a, for me unknown, catfish and will ask you for help to classify it.

It was send with a group of L142 (direct from Brasil) and is 15-20 cm big. Here in Germany I found noboddy who knows it.

I hope you can help me!

Looking at the dorsal fin and counting the rays - 8 - , you can rule out genera like Glyptoperichthys, Liposarcus and Pterygoplichthys. I think this is some Hypostomus.
Have a look in the Cat-eLog.

I was looking in the eLog for all Hypostomus (this was my idea too). But there is no animal that looks like this one.

It looks a bit like <em>Hypostomus myersi</em> but I think the locality is wrong for that. My only other suggestion is L101.

I'd guess it was mixed up at the exporters with other "similar" fish.

For Myersi and l101 I was looking too. But the design of the spots in the fin is very differnt to myseri. In my case the spots are in a row and at myseri it is mixed like on the Body. The photos of l101 looks different too. The spotts are much bigger and brown. My fish is exact like on the photo (gray). And the contrast of the spots is very sharp.

some weaks ago I had an E-Mail answer to my question from Ingo Seidel. He told me it shound be a unknown Hypostomus.

What should I do with a new unknown catfish. Are there some specialists for this cases?

Just enjoy it and wait till it gets a name or a number.
Sending it alive to a scientist (ichthyologist) is no use, as they use dead specimen for determination....

And considering the backlog-list of "unidentified known species", I don't think any time soon would give us anything but L-number or such.

Just joking, its a nice looking fish...I guess all you can do is enjoy him/her and wait for an L number or name to be assigned.
