Setting up a new fish tank

Post by jmcdonald »

Hey everyone,

I have decided on starting a new fish tank. Purely, I will use it with catfish. As soon as I can, I will post the measurements. Could anyone please post regarding what you think would be the absolute neccesities for the tank.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

I dont think a catfish tank would be good, unless they are the same kind of catfish, for example:

-Pictus Catfish aquarium (4-6) if your tank is big enough
-small plecos aquarium (added bonus of breeding fish!)

i mean, i only like tanks that look natural, so you could even do like a biotope tank, like amazon, or if you have a thing for plecos (alot of people do!) then make a river/rapids tank!

Keeping certain types of catfish REQUIRES a species only tank (for example, certain fish that are so agressive/anti-social or that eat just about anything else that you may put in the tank).

But in general, I'm all for mixing things up a bit. If you want to have a tank "mainly for catfish", that's fine. But it's nice both for the catfish to have some "dithers" and the owner to have something else to look at sometimes - particularly as many of the catfish are of the type that hide a lot of the time and you only see them when they are feeding or it's fairly dark in the room.

Dithers are fish that make other fish feel safe. Many different types of fish will do this. Tetras if you want small fish or if you want something larger, perhaps rainbowfish (or larger forms of tetras, of course). Part of the question here is what you personally like, and another part is how accurately you want to replicate the original habitat of the fish you're keeping. For example, some people will only keep fish from the same region (river or lake) in a tank. It's a nice concept, but it can be difficult to match up both the suitable size, behaviour and look that you want from the tank with this. It's very much a personal preference. I have a mixture of origins for my fish: all of the catfish are from South America, but I have rainbows from New Guinea, and rosy barbs that are from somewhere in Souteast Asia.

Your budget may play a huge role in selecting your species. $100 would get you a nice collection of Bristlenose & Cory's. But your basic Plec's are going to begin at $30-40 a head, and really soar from there, depending on availability.

I'm not sure if this is the same tank you mentioned in another thread, but 12"x24" is going to limit your Catfish selection a bit. As Mats mentions, it not just how many Catfish will physically fit in the tank, it's how many that 'they' will allow to be in the tank (the territory).
