Hypancistrus ID needed

Post by Andre Costerus »

Hi There

I am getting 4 of the fish labeled as L340 below. I am hoping that they are true L340's but would be happy even if they are not.

Any takes on what it might be?

Thanks

That's a nice collection - unfortunately, I would like to see a more detailed photo of the fish you're asking about - a closer up lateral with the dorsal fin raised and a shot of the mouth just to confirm it's Hypancistrus - there's several others that have pretty similar. Without a better pic, it's hard to say what it is - certainly can't rule out L340, but there are several others that it could also be.

You have probably got the wrong number for your Peckoltia, I think you have L201 (or L15, they are difficult to tell apart). L204 is definitely NOT your fish, as that's a Flash Panaque, a dark based fish with thin yellow/white lines...

Hi Matts

Thanks for the quick reply. The fish are still in the dealer's tank and I am getting them next week when I will post the pictures you requested.

Thanks again.

Andre,
This labeled L 204 is actually L 52 or Dekeyseria brachyura. I can not tell which from the photo.

Hello,

and that one labeld as "L-340" looks very much like a half grown L-134.
L340 does not show these clear stripes in yellow and black as the L-134 does.
best regards

IMO the striping is wrong for L134 also, but it's definitely not L340. Sorry I'm not more help! They still look like pretty healthy fish for your average LFS. Most people would kill to find a selection like that in their local stores ;).

Hey guys

The collection is pretty good :)
We are lucky enough to get a good supply of nice plecos in the last year or so.

I am picking them up from the airport in an hour or so and will post some new pics once they are safe at home.

I'm not 100% sure it's not L340 (I've seen a LOT of these recently) - it is certainly a Hypancistrus and not a Peckoltia going on the headshape. Not an L134 for sure.

The L340 Looks like a L345 or could also be a juvenile L333.
