Breeding L204

Post by Zohar »

Hi,

I have 5 of them in a 60L tank and i would like to breed them there.

How many should i keep there? I can easily sex them...

What is the water conductivity that i should reach? I would like to breed them at 400, is it low enough?

Any other tip? food?

Zohar,

You have asked in another tread if it's ok to keep them in such a small tank and I answered you will just end up with trouble. 60 L is still to small and they will not breed in that tank...if you are lucky they will just survive.

I have mine in a 90g and that seemed about right for one full grown adult pair. They can get rather large. I'm using the tank now to grow some smaller ones out and am looking for another male for my female to put in another 90g. I'd HAVE to agree on a larger tank. They can be pretty nasty to others of their own kind if there isn't enough room.

In the big tank (~300L) i have also 5 P.maccus that i am trying to breed, is it going to be a problem?

And what about the water conductivity ?

I will start to move them in two weeks from today (making sure they are not sick). But i thought to keep a pair in the small tank, it is much easier to control the water condition in the small tank.

I wouldn't recommend mixing differnet small Panaque species in the same tank when attempting to breed some of them, just to avoid accidental hybridization. You need another big tank, I'm afraid.

As to the conductivity, I'd say aiming for something like 100-150 uS would probably get you the right level for breeding. For just keeping them, 400 uS isn't a problem, I would say.

So why not move the Panaque maccus to your small tank and place all your L204 in your big one instead? You can keep all the L204 together as long there are only one male for a breeding attempt, the conductivity is not the most important thing...it's the oxygen level and to keep the nitrogen level as low as possible, a range between 100-300 µS is ok.

Janne (or someone else breeding these Panaque):

What would you say is a suitable size of aquarium to breed L204 or a similar species?

150-200 L for a pair or a breeding group of 1 male and 2-3 females.

I moved all of them to the big tank (300L) and they are now with the 5 P.maccus. It is not an easy task to take the P.maccus out. Is it a must or i could wait with it?

I think that both species are still not mature for breeding but are very close to that (0-6 months.

Conductivity is 600 and going down. i am planing to stop at 400, do you think it will be enough?

You can probably let the P. maccus stay but the less fishes you have in a breedingtank the easier it's to keep the water quality high. My tapwater have a conductivity between 280-300 µS and that is the level my L204 are breeding in so I dont know if they will do that in a higher level, if I would suggest any level I would say between 150-300 µS.

ok, i will continue the change the water till i reach 250µS, it will take a month or two, i changing 5% twice a week. entering 100µS new water, this is the faster i could go with my RO system, i have the time...
