Post by duonri »

I heard that they will soon start exporting wild L46 - Zebra Pleco from Brazil. Anybody knows if this is correct ?
Thanks.

Where did you heard such thing!

It is just a year they had been forbidden to export, I highly doubt they would change their position this fast and especially that way, it is more likely to go the other way around!!!
The only Hz you could find on the market are either wild caught specimens that were been exported long time ago and have been put into sell by a hobbyist!
Otherwise you will find juvenils from local breeders but that is it!!

Cheers

I actually know of two different importers that have recently received boxes of wild H. zebra for "research" purposes. They are exorbitantly expensive, but they are definitely coming to the US and I highly doubt that other places aren't also getting them. I was not told that they were lifting the ban on exporting them in general at any time in the near future though.

My dealer told me that they currently cost in the range of 250-300 euro purchase price for him. Which would make a salesprice of 700-800 euro...quite rediculous for a tiny black/white fish

In the decision of the IBAMA, it was said Hz could be collected for scientific purpose and with approval of the IBAMA. They would also be along with the collectors to make sure of the purpose of the catching...

Once again, this whole thing is really pure hypocrisis...
The worst of this situation is that no brasilian is allowed to detain any specimen of Hz for any purpose!!!

When are they going to allow a project like "Projecto Arapaima" or similar. Try develop a breeding programm there...this would make more sens!!

Cheers

Well, I agree with what you say Yan, but who in the world would have the ability to do that?
Everybody have to make a living, especially in poor Brazil. The government is probably more interested in trying to keep it's economy from collapsing rather than a bunch of plecos. I think banning was the most they could've done. The rest will be up to the plecos.
This will not happen unless there is a large source of funding from the outside world to fund these projects.
And it ain't even easy. It takes these plecos years (2-3?) to reach adult hood. With the guerillas and drug lords roaming the forrest, it's not like it's going to be walk in the park.

Its not like a breeding programme would cost millions of dollars. If you get it running with say 100 breeding pairs along the riverbanks youd probalby get it cost effective after a few years if the breeding project gets exclusive export rights. Youd have very low running costs as you dont need heating, light, water and workpower is very cheap in Brazil.
