Hi Ben,
Could be anything really:
- mood
- being at ease or not (if there are no hidingplaces, you sometimes see fish make a heap of themselves. The ones in the heap are usually darker coloured, while the ones on top colour lighter, because they have no shelter and are thus less at ease
- different gender (?)
- different species (??)
This is partly experience & partly from books, as I have never had the pleasure of owing Trachycorystes :( .
I assume they don't behave very differently from Trachelyopterus species, of which I do know something

Black. I have an article here about Trachycorystes trachycorystes, "the black woodcat".
Mind you, there are 3 more Trachycorystes species. However, I don't know what they look like. Never seen any pictures of them.

That's what I already thought :).
Let me rephrase the question: I was wondering what the whole wordgroup/sentence meant, or: what did you find out about Trachycorystes?

Direct translation fm that Taiwanese article,

Black-evil-whale (black cat) is the only species with 9 to 10 anal fin rays while other has only 6.

I imported a trachy about a month ago. When it was on coarse greavel it's belly turned pail... not white exactly. when we moved it it turned solid black. Try doing that or using shoe polish.

hmm, that may make some sense... read that this fish is supposed to be very aggressive but my (one with white belly) live peacefully with other cats and bichirs without any aggression.

mine was extremely nocturnal. If it wasn't pitch black he was just a bump on a log. the second it got dim, he'd pound a worm and not let it go.
