What Ancistrus is this...
What Ancistrus is this...
One of my local LFS got a shipment of some WC catfishes, and this one was labelled as L59...
After i pointed out that this is not L59, one store changed the name to "L180??????"
All though at first glans it looked like L183...
It does not have any white spots on it's body as far as i can see...
The tip of the fins on their backs and tail are kind of whitish/ light blue...
Any suggestions will be valued:)

Hi!
it is neither Ancistrus sp L59 nor Ancistrus dolichopterus (L183)
The closest I could find has to be Ancistrus sp L88
Personnally I can't see any spot on your fish!!
By the way L88 is imported from Manaus, but no precise idea of its real catching place!
Cheers

I agree with you that the pics above does not show any small white spots at all, I did not see that in the shop either.
The reason I donâ??t believe it is a L-088, is the fact that it was caught in Rio Negro, according to the list the importer got from his guys in Brazil, a list I have access to.
Second reason would the white/ light blue colour at the tip of the fins, which is something that is L-183 is known for.
L-088 is more brown than black in its colour, is it not?
Late yesterday I saw signs of this small white spots, the reason why these were absent in the first place is beyond me..maybe stress related.
Bearing the fact in mind that the pics above were taken 1 hour after their arrival in my tank, and that the pics is not of the best quality. It may be misleadingâ?¦sorry

Ok, the fish i have got seems to have a mere touch of transport damage to the fins, so i have to fatten them up a bit, and to do a lot of water changes before the fins are back in shape.Fish Soup wrote:I bought 3 L59's a while back. They ended up being L183. Your fish is very much different. L183 has a more rounded, paddle like tail.

Noticed that they are mainly active at night, do not see them during the day...
Could it be that they are labelling some Ancistrus as L59, when it is in fact something else??
I reckon the catching place is correct, since this info is provided by the exporters i Brazil, and it says Rio Negro as far as this so called"L59" is concerned...
If Rio Negro indeed is the place..what other options are there...?
I have to moderate myself regarding the possibility that it can be L88, as Yann said, but the colour does not match so far as i can tell

L59 have and are still used for Ancistrus species with white edges of the fins and mostly they are L183, they labelled them after the old Aqualog which was wrong.
Some exporters put a name of the river in their stocklist's for each species, if they write Rio negro it says only that this species comes from that system not a specified river. Not all species are caught in Rio negro it self, many of them comes from smaller tributarys.

I would also like to add that they got them in all sizes, and the ones that were small( 4 cm) had this white spots that L183 has.., but the big ones did not (maybe due to stress or something), but they are beginning so show though
