Synodontis "multipunctatus" breeding w/o host

Hi all,

I work at an LFS and a customer just came in with an odd story: his Synodontis "multipunctatus" bred in his tank without host fish. I put the species name in quotes because who knows what he really has?

Anyway, he said they scattered ~300 or so eggs and he siphoned them out with a turkey baster. He said 25-30 hatched. The fry are 8 days old now and eating baby brine.

As I understand it, this fish is supposed to be a parasitic spawner that requires a host fish to incubate the eggs. So, I guess my question is...is it unheard of for this fish to spawn without a host? Or just rare? Or is it normal?

Synodontis multipunctatus can spawn without a host.

I just watched mine do it on Wed night. No mouthbrooding cichlid pairs in the tank.I have a group of 9, 5 adults,2 at 3.5",2 at 1.5". They have been together for 3 -4 years now(adults).
