Ancistrus leucostictus?

Post by jopperke »

Hi you all!

Here I am with yet another 'bought as' question. A few days ago, I bougth 4 little fishes labeled as 'NL: geelpuntalgeneter'. I asked for the L nr, which they didn't have, but they gave me the name 'Ancistrus leucostictus' in place. So I very happy, finally an already ID-ed catfish for just 2,69 â?¬ a piece. BUT: is it really a leucostictus? It very much resembles a common ancistrus as I search for pictures... They now are just about 3 cm, so they can still change a lot in colour. Here are some pictures (first two with old cam, rest with my brandnew EOS 350D, it's just heaven! Finally I can take clear pictures of my fish!)

The Cat-eLog doesn't have an entry for Ancistrus Leucostictus for some reason. When searching on the 'net, most of the pictures that I found were very similar to Ancistrus sp(3).

This page, however, show a different fish (second photo): http://www.akwafoto.pl/fotoreport/rychn ... jniki1.php

Fishbase has minimal information. It's from Guyana, so it may be a clue if you can find out from the shop/importer where the fish came from.

I haven't got the original description of the fish. If anyone has access to: "Burgess, W.E., 1989. An atlas of freshwater and marine catfishes: a preliminary survey of the Siluriformes.. T.F.H. Publications, Page 437", maybe it can be confirmed which of the two pictures are closer to the original description.

My suspicion would be that it is , just named slightly different than the "usual" misnamed variations [temminckii or dolichopterus].

This is what Ancistrus cf. leucostictus from near the type locality looks like (picture from le Bail et al.):

Nothing like your fish, I'm afraid.
