New to the Forums

Post by Hypancistrus »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forums here at PC, but have been reading the sites for years. I've been keeping fish for nearly 15 years now, though I took about a short break from serious fish keeping during college. I attended Virginia Tech as a fisheries science major, and am now teaching HS biology and quite happy. I've begun filling my room with tanks, to the delight of my students, and have felt a renewed passion for the hobby I have enjoyed for so long.

I currently have two ten gallon tanks at home- one planted and the other with a lone African Cichlid, a remnant from a tank I had at college. My first school tank is a 29 gallon Amazon River tank. I am heading out to the local fish store today to pick up 3-4 Corydoras (I am hoping for Adolfoi or another species I have yet to keep) as the tank has been set up for two weeks now and I need a few small, hardy fish to jump start the filtration. Eventually I will add either Neon Tetra or Cardinal Tetra, depending on how well I can manage the pH and water hardness, and hopefully a pair of Rams, again, dependent on the pH issues.

I surfed through PC the other day- first time in about three years- and was delighted to find that the site is as sharp and informative as I remember from the late 90's! Awesome site- I am looking forward to reading (and perhaps someday participating in) the forums!

Went to the fish store and came back with three nice looking C. trilineatus. Sold under the name "Julii Cory," of course, but they're Trilineatus- thought the spots aren't QUITE as merged as on many of the pics I looked at on this site.

I'm going to start the tank with these three for about a week and a half and then add two more. Eventually, I'd like to add Cardinal Tetra if possible. A medium sized shoal, about a dozen or so, would look great. As soon as I get a chance, I will try and post pics of the tank- it looks pretty cool so far!

Great to have you here, Hypancistrus! Always good to have yet another passionate aquarium nut like the rest of us. Good luck with those tanks; you could easily manage two dozen cardinals in a 29, and they make such a stunning picture that way, but they'd be the star; couple Rams and the cories would do it for stocking.

Your students will be transfixed.

*laughs* The tank might manage it- not sure about my wallet though! *grins*

I have yet to find Rams here in Baltimore- but I haven't been to the big Aquarium Center yet- only the smaller one. Guess a trip to the other side o' the Beltway is in order.

I put the cats into their home today and they seem to enjoy it. They were moving along the bottom and the drift wood, doing their normal Cory thing. The kids love them!
