There are cichlid and livebearer people collecting in Mexico, so I guess it's okay then

Has anyone explore the northern part of Mexico?

You can find lots of good cichlid collecting articles in Mexico at cichlidae.com. The site is run by Juan Miguel Artigas up in San Luis Potosi and is a very nice site. Most of Mexico's biodiversity is south of the Isthmus of Tuantepec, which is sort of the line between North and Central America. Northern Mexico is basically one big desert.

Would those be the critically endangered pupfish?

(Pupfish are Cyprinodontids not cyprinids)
