Multipunctatus and Petricola - Cost?

Post by mrtwosh »

How much should I expect to pay for either of these?
I am in Kent, England.

I have just set up a Mbuna tank, 200 litres.
Will have about 12 Mbuna (rusties, yellow labs, afras) and will lastly like to add some of the above (one or the other). Is my tank big enough?

Thnaks in advance,
Rob

I can't make any recommendations on tank-size/space requirements, but looking at Tri-Mar's web-site would give some idea of pricing:
http://www.tropicalfish.org.uk/tropical.htm

Prices do vary from shop to shop, depending on a lot of different factors:
1. Size of the fish.
2. Origin of the fish (wild-caughts are generally more expensive, except for species that are hard to breed in captivity)
3. Wholesaler/shop markup. Some shops add 100%, others 200% or 300%.
4. Current popularity/availability of the fish. This can sometimes vary over the season, since some fish will be easily available at one particular time of year, and at other times only remaining stock from earlier capture is available. The wholesaler/shop will want to get some money for keeping that fish for some months...

I prefer to buy fish from my local shop for two reasons:
1. The local shop comes in very handy when you suddenly run out of something, or some part in your filter broke and you need a spare NOW. If only a few people go there every once in a while, it won't be there when you really need it.

2. I like to see the fish before I buy it, which doesn't generally work over the internet.

3. My local shop buys my Bristlenoses. This covers some of the money that the local shop is "more expensive" than the mail-order companies [although Tri-Mar isn't mail-order only, just happens that Cornwall is be geographically remote from me. Other lucky sod's can call Tri-Mar their local...]

4. A good local shop will also be able to give you advice based on what tank(s) you have and know that "This fish is right for you"...

Hello. Prices in US$ in Chicagoland area. Baby Multis $5-7. Adults $18-25. Petricola a few more $'s for adults. LFS can range up to $50 a pop for both depending on store. Find a local breeder if possible. I personally would not pay more than $25 for an adult of either(and should be F0).
