When ( ) and when not??

Post by Marc van Arc »

This is one for our true professionals:
The symbol ( ) is sometimes used after a latin name and then includes the name(-s) of the author(-s). Sometimes it isn't.
My question: when do you use ( ) and when not.
Thanks for any help.

You use the brackets when the name of the fish has been changed since its use in the original description (such as when placed in a different genus).

E.g.

Silurus batrachus Linnaeus, 1758 is now Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus, 1758).
