Keeping the Gold Nuggets Alive
Hello,
I thought the Gold Nuggets where quite easy to satisfy in an aquarium.
I have had my group of 5 Nuggets now for about a year and haven´t
had any problems at all. I had some more practical problems in the beginning
with Nuggets jumping out from the tank. I lost 3 Nuggets this way. They jumped
out through the feeding holes. Now these holes are plugged and I haven´t had
any problems since.
I don´t know how old they are but they where 2-4" when I bought them and now
they are 3-6". I give mine algae wafers, "prawn mix" which is a mixture of prawns
and pees often used as cichlid food (at least in Sweden), vegetable flake food and
courgette. I also have mangrove roots which they chew on a lot. I think that the
wood is necessary for their digestion.
What I have heard about the Nuggets is that they are easy to overfeed or
to give too meaty foods which in a long term kills them. I may not have
reached this stadium yet but I hope I will avoid this.
I hope you found something interesting in my contribution.

@Oneoddfish,
Have you tried different dealers? Ones that use different importers - maybe it's not you maybe it's the quality of care the fish get before they reach you?

Oops I forgot
I forgot the most important thing.
The Nuggets must be in a good shape when you purchase them.
A recomendation is to buy them a few weeks after they have been
shipped to your dealer from the Brazilian supplier. If the local fish
store has kept them for a long time I would be surprised if they still
are in best shape. But of course, if you are an experienced pleco
keeper you can decide if they are in good shape anyway, without
knowing all the background information about how long they have
been in your dealers shop.

It's nearing the end of the dry season ... fishes are easier to catch or are available to catch and are thus cheaper. Gross over-simplification, but you get the idea.Graeme wrote:I've noted the price's also. I can get Royal Plec's for the same price as well.

One problem I have seen plague nuggets is internal parasites. After going through the stress of being shipped around the world, the immune function breaks down and parasites get the upper hand. By that time, you must treat with internal parasite medications. I recommend Levamisole hydrochlorite. It is the best.
