Heating a tank with large fish

i need some help!! I have an 18in arowana and an equally as large TSN and today i just lost a heater! i woke up to a cloudy tank and a busted heater. What can i do, or buy, so that i can feel safe about my fish? is there a cover or shield i can buy?

If possible i want to avoid having to create a sump or anythign of that kind. i was thinking about the ehiem canister with the biult in heater but thats a lil pricey. thanks for any help you can give!

The Visi-Therm Stealth heater(by Aquarium Systems) has a plastic casing, rather than glass. It also shuts off automatically when it's not in water. I use (2) 150 watt heaters in a 75 gallon tank. I didn't catch what size tank you have. Another option is the "in-line" heater from Hydor. I had one, but it didn't work well for me. I've heard good things about it from others, though. If you have a sump filter, you can always place the heaters in the sump. I've never kept company with the larger, more aggressive species. Maybe there's someone around who would know what exact set-up is best for Arowanas and TSNs.

Another alternative would be to use a background module or "fake rock", that you fasten with silicone to one side of the tank (inside

). The module is open at the top, by the water surface, and as long as you have an intake in it (those who are supposed to be used as filter modules often has an intake pre-drilled) you can put a pump (or complete internal filter or the hose leading to an external filter) in the module to create water circulation inside the module. Then put your heater in the module. This looks real good, and you get to hide your filter too.

Back in the days when only posh shops in the large cities stocked heater guards, we used plastic waste pipes, that we had cut to size and drilled holes into it, didnt have any trouble then.

Or you could just buy an unbreakable Titanium heater for about the same price as a good glass one with a gaurd!

I am using a bunch of the Stealth heaters right now and I like them a lot, but when I set up A 75G tank for my Midas I'm going to give that Hydor Eth inline heater a try.
