Ancistrinae sp L128

Post by Yann »

Hi Guys!

I managed to get what I hope to be a pair of , I ll try to post pictures of both anytime (sorry ain't got a numeric camera)...
Both fish are around 6''/15cm
Anyone has a serious tip on how to determine a female from a submissive male.
I sexed mine mainly on the head shape, and on the ventral appearance...
The male has the pectoral odontodes and the interopercular odontodes well define and grown...

From what I have observed, the male has a longer, flatter head when viewed side ways, the female has a more shorter head, anyone to confirm about this...

in advance thanks
All the best
Cheers
Yann

This is my pair of L128 and they are in your size around 15-16 cm, in an overall look...the male look more substantial then the female, and like you say...the male have much longer odontodes on the pectoral and also longer interopercular odontodes.

Male is not so shy and always guarding his favorite spot.

The female is very hard to get a good pic of but you can compare the shape of their heads in this pic's I think.

I have not noticed any differents on their lenght of their heads...I have honestly not look so close either to notice if it's, but I would say that male's have a broader head then females.

Resurrecting an old thread here, but Janne could you put the photos back for this thread? I bought a positively enormous L128 yesterday that I think is female. I have 3 more this size reserved and I'm trying to figure out if I want to just get a pair, or go ahead and take the others also. Here's a picture of the new fish, still in the bag.

Please excuse the terrible picture. Her color looks quite a bit better already today. I'll try to get some more pictures tonight after I do water changes. The tank is pretty tannic.

Has anyone had any success spawning these? I had no intentions of trying until I saw the size of this one!

In this size they are easy to sex, males are much more spinier on the cheek and pectoral fin and if you turn them upside down you can see the different in the genital papilla.

Thanks Janne! I think I'm going to go ahead and pick up the 3 from the wholesaler. I can always sell the extras if they turn out to be male, I'd assume. Wish me luck!

I really hope you find both sexes, I have only seen one at this size before slightly above 20 cm and expensive
I dont think they are to difficult to breed, my pair have shown lots of activities...last year I needed to medicate in these rack of tanks there this are which make all of my species just stop in breeding, the negative side with centralfilter system. Under the summer months seams to be the right time to make a try.

Well hopefully I am still getting the other 3. The boss is putting in a fill in order so they can ship them today, I'll keep you all posted, no worries ;). Just the thought of the size of cave I'm going to need is daunting! Guess it's time to figure out which fish I'm going to need to get rid of to make room for an unplanned project. Eeeek!

Hi Barbie! Was wondering if this project ever went through. Can you give us an update? Do you see possible spawning activity?

I ended up with 6 of these guys, from 6" to pushing 8". As they've settled in and started to mature, I now "think" I have 3 pairs. The dominant one is using a cave now that I built to Hypancistrus dimensions, just sized up for him. His odontodal growth is really amazing, the last month or so. They went from being "maybe" male, to definitely male! I have yet to try to get them stimulated to spawn, as the females don't look well conditioned enough, IMO. I am definitely still working toward that end though!

Good luck with these. Someday I want to try L200, but that's when I'm older and have more money.

That's basicly how I guessed I bought a female from a group of 6, but for some reason the 3 that appeared to be females were also the darkest in color. Maybe males stressing eachother out in a mostly bare display tank?

Now if only I had the $240 to buy the whole lot of 6 I seen at the shop a few months ago myself!

I'm glad the same opportunity presented itself to you though, so I'll warn you now that you'll be hearing from me when their babies are for sale.....heh
