C.aeneus 'gold stripe'

Post by evdzwaag »

I bought some of these today...They are stunning in their beauty (at least in my opinion). I hadn't seen these cory's before the last month. Have they been discovered recently?

These look more the orange stripe variety:

They've been around for at least the last 4-5 years.

Yep, you are right, thanks. By the way.....in the pics in your link are the green stripe variety as well. My importer has those as well and I will get a group of them as well as soon as I have a tank set up for them. I have never been into cory's before, but I am struck by the cory-virus badly now :).

Next question: Do they breed as easy as 'normal'aeneus?

They have indeed been around for several years, I along with others believe that they are closer related to C. melanotaenia than C. aeneus. I have had my group for almost a year and have only recently coaxed them into breeding, they are definately not what you would call easy and I believe the 'Green stripe' are even more difficult.

They're beautiful!
How big do they get? As big as c. Aeneus?

A shop had some of these in the other day and they were large specimens with a poorly defined orange stripe. Is there variation within the species or is it age related?

There is a strain of so called C. aeneus known as C. schultzi, at the moment this is classed as an C. aeneus variety but I am sure it will eventually have its status raised to full species. It has a golden stripe along the back similar to the orange/gold laser but it is narrower and not anywhere near as well defined, it is also a larger deeper bodied fish.
