Easy one -- Panaque maccus?

Post by Matt »

Hey, I'm just wondering, is this <i>Panaque maccus</i>?

<img src="http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/albu ... pic_id=198"/>
Fairly current picture

<img src="http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/albu ... pic_id=202"/>
Several months ago, upon arrival, acclimating in a two-quart bucket.

<img src="http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/albu ... pic_id=203"/>
Five minutes ago, dorsal view.

Also, regardless of species, can the sex be determined by the two recent pictures or is "he" still too small? He/she's only 2.5" TL, tops.

Thanks.

I think it looks like a male. It's hard to say accurately from the pictures, because the hairs on the back body can sometimes look much bigger than they really are.

Edit: Having a second look at your third photo, I'm 95% sure that it's a male.

These fish don't grow MUCH over 3", so 2.5" is probably good enough to sex. Look for "Hairy" back body, and odontodes (spikes) on the gill cover. Females have much less hair on the back of the body and no odontodes on the cheeks.

I'll try to take a picture of my male (unfortunately, my are the most "hidey" of the fish in my tank). This is almost certainly a female:

Yeah, tell me about it; I had to chase him around a little to get him out onto that driftwood for the dorsal view. He's a reclusive little so-and-so...

Alright. Thanks, guys.

Can i disagree with you all?

Matt i think yours could be a male, but probably too early to tell.

MatsP, I think your fish is a female! I have a couple of L002's, and i alway thought they were male due to the reasons you give, until i saw a REAL male at the LFS.

the caudal peduncle is REALLY hairy! ie much hairer than the rest of the body.....

I could be wrong though!

I think we all agree: Matt's fish is a MALE, and the picture I've posted is a FEMALE...
