Pond or Aquarium

Post by J-man »

What would be better for a pair of 7inch channels to grow faster in? My 1800gallon pond thats over a metre deep or my 38gallon heated aquarium? Im in the UK. I hear they are too small to survive out there but I also hear they are found under very thick ice. Any opinions would be appreciated

At 7 inches they are getting too big for the 38. While the heat would make them grow better, the size, and nutrient buildup could stunt them. So, outside they would go, if they were mine :)

They do make some very large, 100+ gallon rubbermaid containers that you could heat though, another option for an inbetween step.

Red Tailed Catfish devours whole arowana

Post by Arowana »

Just wanted to share that my 6 month old Red Tailed catfish devoured a whole arowana. I was told that the 2 would be a good pair and considering the arowana was bigger at the start, there did not seem to be a problem. Unfortunately now that they (catfish and arowana) were 16 inches and 12 inches, it was not much of a problem for the arowana to be swallowed. Just saw the bulging stomach of the catfish i call monster. My arowana (predator) has now become dinner.

Hi Arowana, welcome to the site.

here on planet catfish we like to keep things nice and ordered, so it's probably best to start a new topic in the South American Catfishes (Everything else) forum, as your experience has nothing really to do with J-mans ask for help with channel cats.

sorry to hear about your arrowana though

i think keeping them in a pond would be better, as there is more space. Also, will your cats eat live food, because they may start eating any mosquito larvae or other little goodies in the pond, making them seem more ' wild'

I would say go with the pond.

Also, why do you want them to grow faster? Growing my channel cat was the the first thing I wanted to do, but then as time went on I was always wishing he were smaller.

The reason for growing them faster is so that they can hve a better chance of surviving the winter
