If it is full grown I would say female since there are no tail odontodes.

Lots of L046 Zebra Pleco's, L129, L199, Some cory's, some shrimps, cardinals, glass cats etc

I have not had much luck piecing together pairs when it comes to Plecos. Buying one here and one there usually leaves me with a group of all one sex. Yah sometimes it can be obvious what the sex is but your best bet is to buy as many as you can when you see them to try to get a pair. It might be more expensive but your odds are much better. Just my tid bit on the subject.

Unfortunatly this was not an option - we got the one fish as we only wanted one fish...
However I'm now in a position where more fish is an option
(hopefully lots of little plecos

Yes, get the fury one. Peckoltia are easy to sex. On the back half of its body does it look fury. If so get it. That is a mature male. Are they in their on tank. If so read the article on how to stimulate a spawn. That is, the article on L015. Pretty much the same fish.
