A doradid named Lucky

While setting up a new tank the other weekend (see posting in Tank Talk) I pulled out a small sword plant from the bag and a one inch striped raphael fell into my hand. The unexpected new fish has been in quarentine for a week and is doing well. This is pretty amazing as it spent about an hour in a bag with almost no water. I guess he stayed moist from the plants.

Shane,
Sometimes when I look at the fish in my tanks I try to imagine what they went through to get here. Lets hope Lucky has a long and happy life

An order of apistogramma and other fish were sent to me a few weeks ago and these little bottles that were used to ship them leaked all their water.....the fish in these bottles were fine...not as well for a few of the others in bags. It seems as if, so long as their wet, many fish can endure significant periods out of the water. I've seen Northern pike out of the water for hours and still flipping and gasping, (to my complete dismay).

The wels is sometimes smuggled into Britain (for angling purposes), and specimens wrapped in wet burlap sacking have been confiscated. They can survive that way for several hours.

Shane - same thing happend to me some time ago. I bought some java moss on Bogwood for my community tank and some neons at the same time. I put the neons in the tank leaving them for 30 mins floating in the bag. I then got round to the bogwood. Now my LFS is about a 15 min walk away. I'd forgotten my keys and the wife was out so I had to wait 15 mins more for my mother-in-law to come with spares.

When I got the bogwood out of the bag to my surprise there was a fish in the bag. I put it in the tank of off he swims - happy as a pig in @@@@.

Couldn't believe it. I've no clue how he managed to stay alive for so long but they must be a tough old species.!

It was a spotted Raphael Talking cat - think it's this one
