Ask your LFS what's on their list. They can probably order a lot more plecos than they regularly stock.

There's some different options:
1. As stated earlier, ask you shop if they can bring in the fish you want. Most shops have a wholesaler that has a larger stock than each individiual shop can display. Shops usually stock what they know they can sell, and don't speculatively add expensive fish that aren't sure to sell quickly. Note, this probably doesn't work if your local shop happens to be Walmart... ;-)

2. Find a different shop with bigger stock. This may mean some searching on the web and asking people from your local area.

3. Mail-order/Aquabid. The internet is sometimes a wonderful way of finding things that you can't buy locally. Some fish are quite hard to get, so if you necessarily want ONLY specie X, and you have tried the above two methods, then this is one good choice. There are a lot of people and shops that sell anything from $5 each common fish to very expensive and rare species. Unfortunately, shipping within the US (or further) is rather expensive...

4. Spend some time researching and go on a fishing trip in South America. This is really a last resort, and requires quite a bit of research and preparation, not to mention that any fish brought back home will probably cost much more than $100 each, and you may not even end up with ANY of the fish you wanted... Bringing the fish home can be difficult from a paperworks standpoint too... Not to mention that you may end up with all sorts of diceases... ;-)

I have arranged these in the order that I prefer to do it... [Not that I have had to resort to #3 or #4 on the list so far, but I'm pretty flexible and grab things as they come along rather than "I must have specie X" approach].

I agree with Kev. If we knew where this person was from then someone would be able to help him.

Until I see a location I can relate to (or at least a GLOBALLY recognizable abbreviation), I wouldn't be at all motivated to offer suggestions.
Sincerely,

Thanks for that, Paul. Sometimes I have difficulties with the abbreviations.

I interpreted "ChitoWn" to be some place called Chito in Wisconsin. I don't think even states should be abbreviated, but to put US-centric slang in your location and ask a question like this ...

I agree with PTurley, you guys are real nice handing out info on such a basis.

I wasn't joking earlier.

I think Ali is from Chicago, and he is using the old term "Chi Town" to identify it.

Hasn't anyone heard of it before?

Nope, no idea and I've been to the states quite a few times now (including 3 days in "Chi Town").

Bear in mind this is an international forum, local slang isn't likely to be understood. Would you know where Auld Reekie is?

I have no clue where Auld Reekie is, Jools. Everything's relative, I suppose. That's why I adore this site. No blinders here. We must think of everybody. I like it when I buy a piece of aquarium equipment and I have to search for the English instructions. It tells me I'm not alone in this world, nor the center of it.

Sorry to have caused so much trouble!

I was off-line for a few days, and I come back to see this.
It was exactly because this is an international forum, that I tried to give you a heads up about where that strange place "ChitoWn" might be. I could have been totally wrong. Maybe it's in Singapore. I didn't expect a lecture, though, for just trying to help.

If you really wanted to help Ali, a few general tips such as the ones that Mats gave, would have been enough, and Ali can get back on if he needs more help.

Instead, the whole thread disintegrated into petty points about place names, and not much more.

I do know of an Auld Reekie in Ontario, Canada. It's a sort of hunting and fishing lodge.
I have a feeling, though, that the one you're thinking of
is that castle in Scotland where they have instruments of torture on display.

Deb,

The "lecture" such as it might thinly be construed wasn't aimed at you!

I think the forum guys here are very helpful, this post wasn't taken seriously becuase of the unhelpful entry in the original posts location (which I note hasn't been changed), so it has some other posts on place names perhaps to labour that point but also keep an eye on Ali and see if that person is interested in changing their location and getting some serious answers.

They are 100% right about the location and I'm not surprised the post has not been that fruitful as it is explained in the forum rules why a sensible location is required.

Auld Reekie is local slang for Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. It means old smelly!

Let's not even get started on what it accepted as "in the Valley," IE, Phoenix, Peoria, and a multitude of other cities in said area. The Valley is everywhere, not just in the desert of Arizona!

Thanks, Jools.

And in the spirit of the general theme of the thread, I'm updating my location as it appears on the posts. :D
