Pictus and salt?

Post by Ali1 »

Do pictus catfish need salt in their tank or is it optional? or it never? some1 advised me that salt shouldnt be put with pictus catfish as they will burn even with a small quantity of salt. I just had one and it died the next day, water parameters are fine. Any other good advise on these fishes would be grateful

They don't need salt at all, although they can tolerate a small amount of it. Next time, keep the fish without salt.

Salt is NO GOOD for pictus cats. So you should NOT have salt in the water for a pictus cat.

Without further details it's not possible to explain why the fish died (and it may not be your fault as such, it could be bad stock in the shop, especially if it's a recent arrival).

Oh, I didn't realize you had a brackish tank. I thought you were asking if you could add salt later on.

Yes, I would agree with the analysis that it died because of the salt.

In reality, only very few freshwater tropical fishes are happy with salt in the water.
