fat / plump pleco

Post by thanew »

ok, Ive had this pleco since she was a baby (about 10 months now) but very recently she started to get plump, and I mean plump.

shes been a little less active than she normally is, but is still eating fine (she eats spirulina flakes, algae wafers, frozen algae cubes (spirulina cubes), and shrimp pellets) and whatever else she grazes on), the temp in the tank sits at about 78, the pH is a little high for most plecos (7.8, since its an mbuna tank) but she hasn't displayed any signs of stressed for the 9months shes been in the tank.

anyways heres a picture

oh yeah, someone told me she might be pregnant, but numerous amounts of people stated that its hard to breed plecos in the home aquarium. there is another pleco in the tank, a large 9 inch common pleco...

Hi,
I had the same problem with my L001 2 month ago, very big belly, but was still eating. It's a internal parasite.
I cure him with Pimafix in a small hospital tank, it take one week an now he is ok.
Other people suggest Metronidazole.
Good luck

I knew this girl on another forum who had a plump Gibbicep like your we never thought bought it having parasites nobody did on the whole forum. I was new to the pleco world at the time but now that i think about it, it does make sence. To bad chouin wasnt there to let her know what was wrong with her pleco. Well take care hope you chunky monkey pleco gets better.
