Pim Pictus..

Post by bunjiweb »

I have 3 quite large Pim. Pictus in a 60G tank with a large syno, flagtailed porthole cats, glass cats, a BGK and a couple of cichlids...

The Pictus are very terratorial and will nussle away anything that comes in its terratory. If another pictus becomes too present in its part then they have a fight and i often hear a "squeek" coming from the tank..

Is this normal, are they hurting each other and do you think I Should get some more to even out the aggression...?

Not sure how much help this is, but I've also got three Pim's in a 400L tank (so slightly larger than yours) with a rather eclectic mix of 4 Loricaridae, 5 Brochis splendens and 6 rosy barbs, 5 rainbow-fish and 6 (currently small)eartheaters.

My pims seem to like the same square foot of the tank, but don't really like to bunch up too close, rather hides under a piece of cover each... If any other decides to get too close, it's a small fight, but nothing dramatic. I haven't heard any noise from them... Seems to be normal "I like my personal space" fighting to me. Of course, the literature says that they shoal together, and maybe they do if you have more.

The ones at work shoal together, but there is about 30 of them.

I thought about getting some more but dont want to overstock my tank...

I have 6, and none of the problems you describe!

not shoaling like tetra's, but they're very active, on occasion chasing each other; but all harmless.

not a single nip anywhere!
the solution is in higher numbers, but leaping from 2-3 to 30 or so is over the top!
you get 6-8 Pims and you have NO trouble.

squeaking is completely normal, its just you usually cannot hear it.
i have 2 pictus catfish who have taken shelter under the filter because any food remenants can be snatched up.They are very protective of their own space and will dart at each other to defend it. The small pictus even tries fighting my p***os even though they are 2 and a half inches longer than him!!! he adds so much character to the tank and they were worth the 15 pounds i payed when buying them!!
