Researching before you buy is the only way to avoid fish that either grow huge or have very specific requirements. Fishstores these days sell far too many fish without informing their clients of future considerations. My advice...take them back to where you got them from and exchange for something that suits your means/budget/space....ect. That being said...many of us have been guilty of the same one time or another, when we got started.

Fantail,
It's a very common occurance here in the US. Natefrog has given you some good advise. So has Kev.... If you go back to the "Home" page, there's a book section with some good recommends. I now take the Baensch Aquarium Atlas, Photo Index 1-5 with me to any LFS. I don't care what kind of stares I get. Welcome to Planet Catfish. :D

Although I haven't bought any fish that risk breaking the size of the tank, I have certainly bought fish that turned out to be "not such a good idea", like ones that stress the living daylights out of some other inhabitants of the tank, or die pretty soon after purchasing.

A good reference, or a good shop, will help avoid some of these problems. Knowing what you're buying ALWAYS helps.
