Sexing L200

Post by Lachrymator »

I got these two L200's a week ago. I can't figure out the sex of the second one. The first is definitely a male. If anyone can help, please do. Thanks. The second fish is extremely camera shy and I couldn't get a good shot of it.

Lachrymator,
These are tough fish to sex as they show about the same amount of dimorphism as Hypostomus or Glytopterichthys. The females will eventually become clearly "fatter" when they are gravid and the males will develop slightly more odontodes on the pectoral fins. I have three variations (entire body with spots, front half with spots, and shark fin) of this fish and they all seem to get along. The problem is that they share a 45 with two L 120 (which are each about 7-8 inches total length) and the largest L 200 (around 9-10 inches total length) has taken to beating on the L 120s. There are also four large L 52 (all around 6 inches total length) and they are ignored. My theory is that the L 200 is a male and he is pounding on the two L 120s because they look similar and are both males. Just a theory.

Just curious, but what kind of camera are you using and what is its zoom? (Just doing a little research before I get one)

Actually it is a camcorder. I have a Panasonic DV-100D with a Digital 300x zoom. I filmed the tank for a few minutes and extracted images using MGI VideoWave. Sort of a round about way, but it works. I would like to get a 4-5 MegaPixel camera but it will have to wait until I finish law school.
