What Hypancistrus

Post by Yann »

Hi Guys!

A friend will receive 10 of these.
I have an idea of the possible id but since the fish looks way different of what the exportator has labelled him. Just want you to give me your thoughts on it!!!Just to see if it match my believes!!

It seems to me that tail markings and eye colour is different. Not L 250 - something else.

Yann,
Here is a similar/identical fish I acquired last fall. It was exported as L173 from the Rio Xingu. It had a few L174 mixed in with it...and the L174 that came in the same shipment had a few of these mixed in.

I am not sure of the correct ID, but currently believe this fish is L236...as is yours?

HOWEVER,
THERE IS A DIFFERENT PATTERN IN THE PECTORAL FIN SPINE OF OUR FISH. THE PATTERN ON YOURS RUNS PARALLEL TO THE SPINE, MINE RUNS PERPENDICULAR TO IT. SMARTER PEOPLE THAN I WILL HAVE TO INTERPRET WHAT THAT MEANS.

Hi!

Yes the exportator labelled them as L250. To argument in favor he also said he has Glaser and Japanese importators as customers... but they are clearly not L250 ( the L250 name of the pic was given by the exportator)...

regarding the L236...I ll talk about that later...

Compare the color of their eyes, L250 have not brown eyes like this species have just like L236 and L287.
I think L250 is one species of it's own but the other two are the same species with a highly variable pattern, and maybe L345 also belongs to L236/L287...maybe not in Datz but in the new Aqualog it's the same.

Belo monte is just downstreems of Altamira and in this area it is a big collecting spot of many species...so why does it shows up now and not earlier?
I think made up names like that is nothing you can rely on...when all ten have arrived I am convinced that you will see lots of differents pattern and no one alike the other.

Hi,

i think those plecos, and the plecos from pandadosmares, are Hypancistrus sp. "Belo Monte".

It makes no sense to give them any L-Number, because this species is very varbiable. Nice plecos of this species looks like the L236 or L250 from DATZ, and not so nice ones looks like an L174,L287 or L66 of Aqualog.

In the last time many of them were cought and selled all over the world. Exporters have got a good fantasy in giving them any numbers .... even better then the customers!

Here is a pic of my "Belo Montes":

Hi Yann,

you won't believe it it but this is the pleco you can see on the left side in my picture.

I bought this pleco from Jens Gottwald, owner of "Aquatarium" who cought this pleco together with Ingo Seidel in the Summer of 2004 during an expidition.

Interesting thread as I'm currently getting in a number of these fish.

I did get 6 of the L345's last week. they are still fairly skitish.. only got one half-decent photo..

Image

looks like I did get both males and females... one is *huge* @3-4 inches.. rest are about an inch smaller.

With luck, the L236's come in Sunday
