Silurus: you think it's O. bororo because of the diamond-shaped spot at the base of the caudal?

I'd be happier venturing a guess if I had a better picture, at least clearly showing that the fish does not have an iris diverticulum, and ideally showing lateral line pores and ventral plates.

Is there any info on how big it is, or where it comes from?

Hai

It seems to be a O. mura. The lateral stripe and the caudal fine base is unique as on the pics.
Maybe you know where they have catch this?

I don´t know any data about the place where it was catched.
It was bought in a small shop of my city, where the salesman didn´t know that there´s several species of Otocinclus :? .

It´s lenght is about 3 cm. I don´t know if it´s a useful data for a correct indentification. It hasn´t grown since I have it.

I´ll try to do one better picture.

Looks like a O. bororo on this picture. I believe that the picture from berni shows a O. mura (female).

Yes, the fish on the picture is O. bororo, which I think â??as youâ?? that is not Berni´s fish.

But, how do you differenciatte between O. caxaxari and O. mura???? :?:

According to Schaefer, O. caxaxari can be differentiated from O. mura only by the number of lateral sheds. O. mura possesses 22-24 and O. caxaxari 25.

therefore, why do you think is a female? :?:

has someone real pics of O. mura?:?:

Hai jorge

it's difficult. It`s right what you wrote here. You can only distinguish them at the lateral plates. Thats why i ask where this fish was found. His name got the fish from the native people, the mura, living there at the river regions. I`ve never heard that O. bororo was exported.

therefore, why do you think is a female? :?:

has someone real pics of O. mura?:?:
Just my meaning. It could also be a male, but my experience let me believe this. Look like a "bigger" Oto on Bernis pic.
The female Otocinclus has smaller Odontodes at the upper caudal fin base.

I have only the drawings from Schaefers neotropical cascudinhos..... Look at the drawing of O. mura in this article. You will find no different in the pigmentation to Bernis fish.

Schaefer tell that O. bororo is not distingushable (??)from O. mura by pigmentation. Look at your pic. The pigmentation is not the same as O. mura. In some cases Schaefer`s article should be read carefully.

Much of the problem is that Schaefers key isn't based on coloration at all, as it is is made through study of alcohol preserved specimens, meaning that identifying live fish from photos using Schaefers key is very difficult, if at all possible.

However, to me both Bernis fish as well as the drawing of O. mura posted by 4zap, look similar to the one listed as Otocinclus sp. 1 in the Cat-eLog.
