25g tank: 2 royal (L191 and L190) ?

Post by Chouin »

Hi everyone,
I know that a 25g tank is very small for panaque, but ....
I already have a 3" royal pleco (L191) in there, very nice, but not very active.
But today, I saw some nice 3" royal pleco (L190) at the lfs , there were like 6-7 in the tank. And the price on them was very very good to: 25$(CAN) a piece. Normaly the price range from 50 to 60$ for this kind of pleco ever here.
So, what do you think, will it be a good decision to buy one of them?
I aslo have an other choice, they also have other nice small pleco like L022, clown plecoand ancitrus and other one that look like ancitrus. I was thinking about buying a small L022 and a small clown pleco.
Thank You
Chouin

IMO your tank is too small to house even the one panaque,Sorry.

To somewhat second that, did you read to see how large both those royals get? Not only would they not have any room to move, but they would likely have issues with water quality in that small a tank... Get some nice dwarf species....

Here is what you do, start saving for a larger tank for the Panaque species and then save the 25 gallon for some Ancistrus, Peckoltia or Hypancistrus species. The best of both worlds!

CHouin!

Have you read about the requirement for this species!!!

Just check how big these can grow!!!

Keeping these in 25g is like keeping a goldfish in a fish bowl!!!

Cheers

LimaShovel: That's two. Yet another trivial post.

Besides aren't you keeping a Tiger Shovelnose (IN ADDITION TO OTHER FISH) in an 80 gallon tank? Your advice would be more welcomed if you actually followed it!

To take this back to the original thread: If you want to have Panaque species in a small tank, why not go for a small-size panaque, such as the . There are some other Panaque species that are similar sized, about 4-5" (100-130mm).

Take the (will be) big ones back to the shop and get ones that will fit in your tank.

Or get a BIG tank that is suitable for the fish you've got. You need something that is about 5' x 2' x 2' (or 150 x 60 x 60) to keep fish that grows to the size of P. Nigrolineatus. If you're OK with getting a tank that size, then get the tank first, then the fish.

I'm aware of the maximum size of Royals, but I don't see why they can be kept in a smaller tank while they are still young. I mean, it's obvious a full-grown Royal needs a very large tank with a very powerful filtration system, but is it necessary to house one or two 3" specimen in such a large tank???
Many people grow out juvenile fish in a small tank - which, as long as it meets the species-specific requirements, shouldn't be a problem, imho. It's not that a 3" Royal overnight outgrows a 25g tank, does it?
So as long as you know what you're up to, and are prepared, I don't see any problems housing two 3" pleco's in a 25g tank. But again, that's just me...... :)
