Corydoras duplicareus and which will cause hybrid ?

Post by corydorus »

Need expert opinion.

Corydoras duplicareus in my tank has been spawning several times. Question is which species below may mate with it to cause hybrid ?

I have below adult species in my Cory tank.
Corydoras adolfoi
Corydoras caudimaculatus
Corydoras agassizi
Corydoras atropersonatus
Corydoras haraldschultzi
Corydoras hastatus
Corydoras habrosus
Corydoras seussi

Dennis,

Typically, given a chance to mate with their own species, Corydoras (all fish?) WON'T cross-breed.

If you're trying to prevent cross-breeding, my suggestion might be obvious, based on your list.

If you're trying to encourage cross-breeding, well...never mind my opinion.

If you have actually had duplicareus (or any other species)
and some other species perform the spawning ritual:
1) The eggs may not be fertile.
2) The fry may not survive.
3) The offspring will be infertile.

I am not a scientist, nor do I have first-hand knowledge of these things. My opinions are based on what I've heard or read. I am often wrong.

I would imagine that Corydoras duplicareus would cross with adolfoi. I have seen hybrids in my area before. I was spawning duplicareus for a number of years and distributed the fish to some of my friends. I beleive my friend Dan unintentionally crossed the duplicareus with panda and got viable fry. I just telephoned him for more information but he was not available. If your intentions are to breed the different species of Corys as Kevin inferred I would keep the fish in species tanks.

My intention is to be sure I only have duplicareous frys.

And if I noticed other frys types I am safe to classify under one of the identified distinct species incase I've hybrid.

I am too busy to bother about hybrid programs ....

I have had adolfi cross with panda cories as well before, so I would guess it would be just as easy if not more so for it to happen with duplicareus. It was easy to tell with the adolfi panda mix as they had adolfi color but black everywhere that it would be on a panda. It was almost a perfect overlay of color between the two. I corrected the situation so that it would not happen again. Most of eggs hatched as well from the batches. (It took me untill they had their color till I figured it out)

I don't have panda in my tank. Currently the oldest fry more than 10 months old has very thick band to indicate clearly duplicareus. 3 youger siblings are about 3 months old and colours are not full blown yet to decide adolfi, duplicareus or mix from them.

But out of the 7 adults "duplicareu" on close scrutiny, 3 probably can be re-classify under the adolfi bandth if we go
by black bandth almost reaching the middle line of the body.
But it maybe becoz it is female with less dense colour.

If the hybrid is resulted of other cory species it will be easily recognise. But if is with adolfi then I will have a problem. Hope not.

To me all the pictures show C. adolfoi, it is not easy to diferenciate between the two species by just colour pattern, the only real diferentiating point are the serations in the anterior edge of the pectoral fin spines in C. duplicareus, these would show up in the close up pictures, but the fin spines look fairly smooth. So I think you only have C. adolfoi which there will not be hybrids, and if there are enough unmbers of the other species there should not be a problem there either.

It has taken me some time for the pics as I try to minimise disturbance to a breeding tank.

thankyou for the confirmation lan !

My next task is try to take some close pic of duplicareus later.

Starsky, thanks.

Luckily my tank continues to spawn "Duplicarues Eggs" after removing the 2 Adolfoi to another ... phew !

( Purchased them long time ago separately in 3-4 batches from different LFS)

Did not pull up a duplicareus. Instead i got a look like adolfoi again. See pictures.

I have a physical feel on the anterior side of the pectorial fin. Is actually a bit rough in the inner section but smoothen nearer to the tip.

another thing i notice is the small black specker spots on the fins.
