What is more rare in the trade ?

I've seen far more Lophiosilurus than Platynematichthys. They're both stunning fish, but I find Platynematichtys particularly beautiful, and in size one of the more manageable large Pims (but still requiring several hundred gallons as a minimum).
If space is at all an issue I'd be more interested in Lophiosilurus, they are bizarre and fascinating beasts.

Mmmm, superb, like a Leopard Shark on acid! Where was this picture taken? How big was the aquarium? (I'm guessing multi-thousands of gallons looking at the other inhabitants)

I've never seen one in the flesh, yet David Sands reports them as widespread. Why the disparity?

Not that I'm complaining, a fish that's best left in the wild.

They are widespread, just not imported that often. They are expensive when they do come over (usually from Peru I believe). The works by Sands are now very much out of date though, knowledge has moved on hugely since then.

I know of a couple of people who have them... very cool cats. They do tend to be expensive though!!

my LFS used to have 2 (1.2 footer) abt 2 months back.

seems like they don't do well during transportation. cos one didn't make it few days after landing and the other speciment took many many weeks just to stablize.
