What kind of catfish is this?

Post by Heyguy74 »

I bought the catfish when it was about 8 inches. Its now pushing 15 inches and doesn't look like its gonna stop growing. He can be aggressive when hes not fed on time. Ive seen chucks taken out of my oscar and flowerhorn. The bite marks are definatly from the catfish cause no other fish has trhe bite radius of him in that tank. It almost looks like a person bit the fish. Any help in identifying the catfish would be great.

We can't do this accurately without a picture.

You have (the Asian redtail catfish). Unfortunately, it will continue to take bites out of tankmates. I'd keep it alone (in a very large tank/pond, I might add) if I were you.

Given the size it reaches, I would say at least 220 gallons.

As I have a situation with a large cat, , I would suggest returning/selling/euthanizing before you can no longer care for him. You'll end up with a LARGE single specimen tank.

I have no problem with a one fish tank. I have plenty of room in my basement to put any size tank I need to. I like keeping the larger cichlids so another big fish is cool with me. Once I get a fish its mine for life. I already have 8 tanks so the more the better. Most likely I'll build him a tank.

Hi Dave,
I take it euthanizing is the very, very last option you have, considering a fish is healthy.
Better to think beforehand what you are going to buy, and when in doubt check the sources about your future lovely new 2 inch cat and what it will look like after 6 months.
Mind you, I've been there too -).
