upside down cat tank
upside down cat tank
I will soon have an empty 20 gallon high tank available (24" long, 12" wide - slightly shorter than most 20 gallons). I know that the "high" versions of tanks aren't as ideal for catfish as the long, but it's all I have room for right now. I would like to set up a species tank and was wondering if a shoal of 4 S. nigriventris would have enough room in this size tank. They would be the only fish in there. I have never kept them before, and don't really know how much swimming room they need and whatnot. Thanks for any suggestions.

For a single species tank these are one of my favorites and they got me interested in syno's, quite often described as bland or plain corlored browns, when kept by themselves with a good diet and lighting they can have many subtle hues of different colors and not one is the same.
I would go for six, put in some wood and some overhanging stones or caves, they will setup house in these overhangs, mine seem to especially like the integration of a small cave and a overhanging stone together, you will see much more interaction between the fish as they protect the choicest overhangs.
The tall twenty wouldn't be so bad as thes fish are not neccesarily bottom feeders, you can have the sticks and overhangs fill in the mid section and they will not mind.
If you add other fish only add gentle fish that are not to aggressive at feeding time as it takes a little while for them to get up the courage to leave their home especially with other fish in the tank.
