baby albino ancistrus

Hi All
I have just successfully hatched out 6 albino ancistrus......still in the cave with "dad".....and I was just wondering ,when to feed them and with what ?

hey,congratulations! , once they have absorbed their yokesacs they can be fed various vegetables including blanched lettuce and Zuccini.As they mature they can be fed sinking catfish pellets occasionally, this seems to work with mine!

I also just had my first albino ancistrus spawn. About 35 fry. They came out of the cave on Christmas eve. I have been feeding peas (cooked, smashed, and deshelled), finely crushed flake and BBS. The parents are still in there so I also add a slice of zuchinni, and one or twice a week raw shrimp or scallop. The "kids" are eating everything I offer!

I know it's a commonly bred plec, but being my first pleco spawn I'm kind of excited.

L260 / Julian,

Do they breed true.. the albino genes, I mean? Or do you get a mix of Albino and regular bristlenose?

Jenny,

If both parents are albino, you can only get albino offspring. It is only when you have hetrozygus parents that are normal colour but "split" for albino that you get a mixture of fry.

Mine have bred true also ................but surely come time you might get the odd though back ,with normal brown colouring?

Hi Sid,

Basically the gene for color is dominant over the gene for albino, so if they carry one of each gene, the fish will be dark, but have the ability to throw albino fry, if crossed with another fish with a recessive or even two recessive genes for albino. Fish with two albino genes are albino. THey have no genetics for the colored pattern, hence, no, they won't have dark fry. Does that make more sense?
