What might this catfish be..?

Post by NotNoisy »

Apparently the fish's spots aren't as brightly colored as they are on this picture, they are a paler beige color.

That was what I thought at first, but it looks like the fish has only 7 branched dorsal-fin rays.

I couldn't tell for sure with the angle, but the dorsal didn't look quite right. I was hoping a peek at the catelog would either get a better picture or a firm "NO", hehe.

Any chance for more pictures? It looks like a Scobiancistrus but more or better pic's are needed.

It was sold as L146 - which it of course is *not*. It looks a bit like a Scobiancistrus to me though....

I agree with Silurus, the dorsal fin doesn't look like a L001....

The tummy is spotted as well - except for a small part which is light/seethrough in color.

I've asked for more pictures, but apparently it doesn't want to be taken pic's of ;) Actually, I guessed L253.... can I get a negative on that?

I did think L253, but I'm not an expert. I was looking for a match, but I didn't find anything, and then I got caught up with that work bit that I'm being paid to do from time to time... ;-)

Hello everybody.

Since so many have taken an interest in identifying my catfishes, her are more pics. Unfortunately the quality is not as good as one could want for. Actually, there is two catfishes that I've bought as L146. I've numbered them 1 and 2. They are not quite similar, as you can see HERE. http://www.tibe.dk/catfish/

I really appreciate you all take an interest in identifying my fishes, thank you!

I'm very far from being any kind of expert. But several has suggested the L253, so I looked at the photos in the base. They are very similar with my fishes as far as I can tell, but there is a photo of a tummy with a defined pattern. There is no such pattern on my fishes. Is the a possibility for them being L253 even with out the pattern? :?:

I've looked at the pictures of LDA31 in the base. I don't find the fishes so much looking like LDA31 as they do L253. They where different underneath. But again, I'm no expert.

Sorry, have accidentally posted msg. for the Scandinavian catfish-forum here. Shall not be repeated. It's the nerve-racking experience of being a member of several forums.

Could it be L136b?

Post by Tibe »

Thank you all for spending time helping me to determine what kind of catfish these are. I really do appreciate it. But Iâ??m still not sure. Recently Iâ??ve also looked at the L136B, which I find quite similar, along with the L 253. Iâ??ve got a new camera, which is a huge improvement, and will try to get better photos soon. Iâ??m just trying to improve the human factor too.

No, definately not. Both mouths are not the right rhombus shape and head shape of the Hypancistrus is too pointed and it's eye is too big for Leproacanthicus. Also the Scobinancistrus is slightly more elongate in the body. There are other differences but these are enough.

I think Janne is spot on. Pun intended.

It's hard to tell these fish apart, but once you see (and thus learn) the differences between genera it becomes easier. The first step is to look beyond colour pattern at things like body shape, eye position, size of fins and so on. Seeing these fish together in person helps a lot too.

I can remember sitting in my favourite LFS with Hans-Georg Evers and he patiently showed me the differences in three species of black with white spots Hypostomus from the Rio Sao Fancisco he had collected. I still can't identify them from photos but when he was pulling them out of the tank and showing me them it all made sense.

This is my scobinancistrus - what I believe to be L-253. It seems to look a lot like it.

Number 2 looks a lot like L-201 but I have also had young L-029s look like that only to grow into leporacanthicus galaxis
