Well, Im new here, only my second post, well due to money problems I was selling some of my zebras off.
Well, about 2 weeks ago I put about 16 of the ones I was going to sell into a 20gal long, then the other day I was looking at them and I saw one stuck in a breeding bell, so I decided to get him out cause I was going to bag him up-
Low and behold, eggs! I was so stupid cause I disturbed him, I was amazed at the eggs, I tried to put him and the eggs back in, at first he took them back but eventually fled the cave. Ive put them in a tumbler but knwo they wont hatch, they were white with veins, I called my buddy Steve in Chicago and he told me from the fuzzy pics that I sent him that they were in fact eggs! Im so excited, even though they didnt do well this time ( Because of me) they will lay again.
Whats funny is that they were not set up at all to breed,
The temp was about 80-81 degrees, and only 1 sponge filter in there, no current or extra air, and I fed them flake and wafers from Spectrum. Maybe some blood worms and beef heart once a week but thats all.
Well, Im not selling those guys, lol. But I feel lucky just that they laid eggs. Dont know the male to female ratio either. Im just gonna leave them in there and not bother them again.
But thanks to all for having a great site and hope to soon have my own pics of fry swimming around soon on here for all to see. This site lets people like me (novices) hjave some place to look fro great info.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike
Most first spawns of hypancistrus zebra are infertile, although if you seen "veins", they might just be ok. Make sure you have an airstone close to the eggs to encourage water movement, (this will take the place of the male cleaning the eggs with his mouth).
Keep your fingers crossed, and remove any of the mouldy eggs. If you don't have any luck with this batch, I wouldn't worry, it's common for them to spawn again in a couple of weeks.
good lcuk

My wife made the mistake of buying me a 2 ft tank and it grew to 7ft.
