For every Sturisoma entry in the Cat-eLog, the link for the thumbnails of the genus lead to that of Sturisomatichthys instead.

This one I know about and it's a bug that's here to stay I'm afraid. It's becuase the first 8 characters are the same in the generic names..... It only manifests itself in the place you spotted it.

might not look neat or be up to standards, but if you re-place the sturisoma species as "sturi-soma" and leave the sturisomathichthys as it is, you might avoid the bug.....

Or use Oxyloricaria in the link (which is a synonym of Sturisoma).

Nope, to do that I would need to change all Sturisoma to Oxyloricaria and that's just plain wrong!

Can you "force" the genus thumbnail view to be that of Sturisoma instead of Sturisomatichthys? The need for the former would be greater (i.e. it would be viewed a lot more times anyway).

Surely the Cat-eLog doesn't need to work with Windows 3.1 or DOS? So what's wrong with having longer file names?

Most servers today run either linux/Unix (which inherently support long names) or Windows 2000/.Net/2003 Server, which also support long names. So why do you have to limit the directory name to be 8 chars long? Is this some sort of tool limitation? If so, isn't there some sort of override to say "I want long names"...

By the way, this is not a criticism of the way that PC is maintained, just meant as a suggestion for solving the problem with a species that cause problems because the name is not unique within the first 8 chars.

There may well be issues that I don't understand here, so appologies for any misunderstandings on the subject.

The issue with 8.3 format filenames isn't actually a windows 3 etc problem, it's a 16-bit problem. The version of windows database manipulation software I'm using is 16-bit, so it can only handle 8.3 filenames.

I could upgrade, but the choice is upgrade and fix all the bugs that would arise (as well as the sort of fixes mentioned here) or get data into the current system and worry about the upgrade later.

This is further complicated by the fact that we could miss out the 32-bit database manipulation software entirely and go straight to an online database (which would be MYSQL), but that appears to be some way off.

As a reasonably elegant frig, I have changed it to SturÃ¬somatichthys - note the odd i character. This may make this particular species a little less visible to search engines but overall I think it is an improvement.

Certainly it fixes the genus problem. This will be available in the next upload.
