They are nocturnal. Just using room light instead of the aquarium light might help. My tend to be rather shy it seems, if they notice I am there they hide unless I am feeding them. But if I just sit still for a couple of minutes (not right up next to the tank) I will usually see them running all over. I have noticed with mine that the older they get the more I see them out and about. The behaviour you described seems pretty typical. You may also make sure that their is not other fish picking on them. I don't know what it is with Lelupi's but they are always attacking my syno's.

The larger the group of petricola, the more often you'll see them out cruising around, also, IME. I couldn't be satisfied with just a few of them, and by the time I really realized it, I had 24. In numbers like that, they honestly don't care who is around. Then again, you have to have a pretty good sized tank to keep anything else with them ;)

I have I think 8 in a 20 gallon Long with java fern, sea shells and clay pots. and they are alone in it with no lighting on the tank just a glass cover.

Jeff,

A 20 gallon long is a little small for 8 petricola. Are they adult size? If they start to pair off it might get a little rough. I frequently see my petricolas dash about the tank, especially at feeding time.
