Pregnant Ancistrus

Post by Algaedarling »

Hello all,
I have a very pregnant Ancistrus. She is so fat that it looks physically uncomfortable to me. I can actually see eggs when I look at the thinner skin on her belly with a flashlight. She has been massive for at least two weeks now and I'm starting to get really concerned.
Here's my problem: I don't have a male of her species yet. Will she be okay without a male? Is a male required for her to lay her eggs? If so, will her health be compromised by "holding" them in? Is there anything I can do to relieve her stress in the meantime? Any suggestions or information would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alyx
PS- I even tried putting my experienced Ancistrus claro male in with her, with plans of destroying any fertilized eggs, in hopes of inducing her to spawn. He doesn't show the least bit of interest in her, even though she's been swimming from cave to cave to claro and back again.
