Syno identification

Post by Tankbusterluver »

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me what species of syno this is? The closest I could find on the list here is Synodontis ocellifer and Synodontis katangae.

In the description for Synodontis ocellifer it says their adipose fin is very long, almost running from dorsal to caudal fin. I don't believe mine has that (at least not compared to the ones in the species profile).

Here are some pics, sorry not the best quality..
It is about 4inches at the moment.

Thanks,

Nope, it's a hybrid. Looks closest to this.

Hmm really. I agree it looks like the fish in the link you gave, except for the spotting on the head, but I suppose if it really is a hybrid there could be variations...
My dad bought this guy a few months ago from Big Al's, they were in the same tank as some dwarf petricola. He was told it would stay small similar to the dwarfs but obviously that's not true. :?

I also have aquired one of these catfish. It was sold to me as S. multipunctatus... but when I looked at it closely after getting it home, I was quite doubtful. As I watched it grow, (rapidly, I might add,) I became certain it was not a multipunctatus. Browsing through the Cat-eLog, I also noticed that the closest fish was either S. occelifer or the hybrid previously mentioned. I have an occelifer, and he is much more silver/grey than the copper/brown of this fish. I am curious if this fish can be tracked back to its source. If anyone wants more info on where I obtained it, to help the tracking, let me know.
So many catfish, so little space, and so little money. Do banks let you take loans to buy fish?
