Still having KH problems

Post by WALL »

I am still having problems with my KH in my 1000lt tank.
HELP !!
I have added KH up( SERA ) into tank but this seems to be taking the KH lower .
I also added calicum carbonate in a small bag into my filter.
PH - 7.0 stable for over 10mths
GH - 100ppm
KH - 0 ppm was 50+ ppm before i added KH up for over 6mths
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Ammonia - 0 ppm
I have not had any movement in my tests except KH .
I have also had my water tested by my local pet shop.To check againt my results and testers to see if i was wrong or getting a false readings.

What can i do ?

Ummm... What's the problem?

Your pH is stable and acceptable to any fish you might care to own, why do you want to muck with the KH?

If you're worried the KH may get depleted and the pH suddenly go crashing down, add a significant amount of limestone (or coral, or seashells, or cuttlefishbone, or eggshell, or ANYTHING made of calcium carbonate - which, incidentally, blackboard chalk isn't) to your tank, and that'll raise your pH to 7.5 and lock it there.

Adding bicarb is a quick & temporary fix, and I really wouldn't advice it unless you've got real problems maintaining a stable pH.

What is your tap kH? If it is 3 degrees or more, the answer is simple, just do more water changes to remove the waste that has built up in the water. It is acidic and it dissolves the kH from the water as it keeps the pH stable, until it is eventually exhausted. If the tap kH is low, you will be reduced to adding a commercial type of buffer to stabilize it, or adding the coral. Adding coral and CO2 will cause some fluctuations that your fish won't see the humor in at first, so remember to go slowly.
