Starting a breeding program

Post by olway »

I have, for many years, kept corys of one type or another and have always wanted to breed them.
I have been thinking of starting with c. paleatus and then going onto something a bit harder ie c.julii.
My question is, what equipment do i need in order to get them upto breeding condition and then to breed and then to grow on the fry :) I was thinking of an undivided 48x15x12 plus 2X 48x15x12 split into 2(thats 4X 24x15x12) all running on sponge filters. Would this be to much!! maybe 36in tanks instead of the 48in
Any coments would be very helpful.

Thanks Richard

Starting a breeding program

Post by Aquamick »

Hi Olway,
Ive just started a breeding program (my first one!) with C. Paleatus, and Im conditioning them in the community tank, giving plenty of fast sinking pellets my dealer sells under their own name. fast sinking so the guppies (also in the tank) don't get them!

My Corys relish bloodworm, and also enjoy Daphnia,of which I have a culture.(fizzy pop bottle, with airstone, and pinch of supermarket dried yeast thrown in every few days. This was seeded with a small bag also from my retailer)

With growing on the fry, I use a 15 litre with 1 sponge filter and an airstone, the latter turned down very low. This is the same tank I use for spawning,as I find moving the eggs/fry results in to many losses. With regard to the size,I think the 36in will be just fine.

I hope this helps!

It definately looks like the tanks I've chosen are too big!! A couple of plastic "gold fish" type tanks looks in order for the fry, rather than 2ft tanks!! The wifes going to be happy

Thanks
