Why do Cory's "stand" on their ventral fins?

Post by MC »

Probably a rather silly question, however, I have noted it as a regular behaviour of my Corydoras. Quite interesting to watch indeed. Is there a purpose?

*L* So bad!

Mine do that, too. They look so artfully and delicately balanced when they are standing on nothing but their ventral fins. It's so cute! They are saying, "See, look at us pose. We are beautiful and can balance gracefully." Very cute, indeed. :)

Haha  Yes very funny ;-)

It actually reminds me of Meerkats (sp?) the way they stick their heads up in the air looking for danger. Not quite the same but still rather interesting.

Oooh, maybe they are trying to get *that* much higher to look around them.

Meerkats are very cool little animals. I did a report on them once, a very long time ago.

Q: How tall is Cartman in real life?

A: Well, Cartman doesn't exist in real life, but if he did he'd be two feet tall.

I'm going to have to agree... standing on the ventral is cute & so is just about anything else a cory does so the two just kinda go together :D.

When watching my females I've also often noted that they might be doing it simpley to releive pressure on their fiercly swollen bellies (they get lots to eat, can't help when those cute little faces peer at me thru the glass). I've no evidence to back this up however - but it might be an interesting thing to look into.

But then again... maybe they do just do it because it's cute...

For lack of real knowledge, I'm guessing it's the cuteness factor. :D

Fish Demon, your cory is adorable! That's a really nice picture. :)

I have seen my little guys doing that too. Usually they are situated right next to the glass, watching me. "feed me, feed me".

Filbert also has the cute habit of perching in the fronds of the plants. So cute to see a fish perching!

Mine stand on their ventrals and tails like MC's et al. I have only seen arcuatus and schwartzi doing it and they look to me like little Kangaroos. Ultra cute.

Fiskars stand on their ventrals and whiskers. What does it mean? Are they trying to tell him something?

HaHa
Mine are quite fat ( it seems most cories are very rotund ) . Maybe they are doing push ups and just stop when we walk by . Guys do that at the gym all the time .

I never really gave it much thought, but if you were pushing rocks around with your nose for most of the day don't you think it would be nice to get it up in the air a bit. Kind of like kicking your shoes off and falling into the recliner after a long day at work

Interestingly enough I have a rainbow shark in with my brochis splendens and since moving to that tank , the shark also stands on his ventral fins.

See, this just proves that other fish realize how cool catfish are. They want to be like them as much as possible. 8) Irishguy, thank you! My Schwartziis are some of my favorite cories. They are really funny when they're together.
