Is this a common pleco?

Post by zoostation1973 »

Sorry I can't get a better photo, he's camera shy Most common pleco's I'm used to dealing with are darker, with shades of black and gray.
This little fella is much, much lighter.. with a sandy hue and orange/rust colored fins, his dorsal is so so light it's almost clear. Still a common pleco? If not, what could he be? Thanks.

Hi!

Any chance to make a better pic...

Several features could make us believe it is a Bristlenose: Ancistrus sp

But the tail region rather show a Gliptoperichthys or Hypostomus...

Cheers

That looks like a (somewhat raggedy) veiltail bristlenose. Attach a few slivers (cut julienne style if you know your cookery) of cucumber to a stone with a rubbet band and he'll soon become more brave in front of you and the camera.

The tail...

Post by Frisckey1 »

The ringlets on the tail look like my Liposarcus Pardalis, but maybe other plecos share the rings on the tail?

just by counting the spines on the dorsal fin you can rule out Hypostomus and Ancistrus and consentrate your search on Glyptoperichthys or Liposarcus
